Ask the second-year carpenters about last term and the same grin appears on every face. Twelve weeks, one oak dresser each, three bench reviews — and somewhere between the second dovetail and the final polish, practice turned into profession.
The dresser project
Every student built the same dresser from the same boards, and no two came out alike. “That was the lesson,” says tutor James Whitfield. “Same plan, same timber, different hands. The craft is what you bring to the drawing.” The finished dressers now furnish the training hall library — signed, dated, and already scuffed by daily use.
What the students say
“I stopped measuring twice and started understanding once,” laughs apprentice Tom Becker. “The review where Master Aldane ran her hand over my drawer front and just nodded — I'll work off that nod for a year.” Applications for next year's cohort close in May; the dresser awaits.
